My Nintendo 3DS mini-review
I got my 3DS today and thus far I love it, and I haven't gotten a headache from it despite having the 3D on max. I also wear contacts so I would think it would bug me quite a bit, but it doesn't, I guess I am just fortunate not to get eyestrain from 3D.
Anyway, after having it for 7 hours I have to say, it's pretty and I do not regret buying it one bit, too bad it did poorly in sales... but I am sure it will pick up once Ninty starts handing out the GOOD games for it.
For your convenience I have compiled a lsit of Pros and Cons to the system, all of which will likely be fixed in the next iteration of the 3DS; I don't care if Ninty said there won't be one... it's a tradition and they can't break it now, anyway onto the list:
Pros:
-The 3D is crisp and looks like there is depth to the screen which gets rid of my fears of stuff popping out at you like crappy cinema quality 3D, Depth > Perception.
-The analog stick works on all DS, DSi, and 3DS games and it's almost as seamless as a console analog, it also has a concave in it, and thus far all indication is that its far better than the PSPs clunky plastic nub.
-This little bastard is capable of Mono, Stereo, and True 5.1(?) Surround sound, and the sound quality is amazing for a handheld.... or should I say Portable Console?
-It's lightweight and the 3D effect is easy to keep control of, so there aren't many times when you will lose the effect unless you completely tilt the screen in a way it SHOULDN'T BE.
-It plays AVI/MP4 MP3 and AAC files natively as well.
-Solid software lineup over the year with many more to be revealed at E3.
Cons:
-No background images for the menu, there aren't many customization options either, Ninty needs to realize we like to personalize our or stuff already, I mean the DSi let you do it to some extent so why not the 3DS?
-The icons on the top screen spin in hyperdrive when in a moving vehicle which can overload the ram and crash it; only has happened once. Otherwise it's pretty cool, I mean I burped and it span the Mii app like a rabid dog chasing it's tail.
-The bottom screen is elevated, so it can easily scratch the top screen when closed, this is an easy fix but a completely avoidable design flaw.
-3DS sound mode will record EVERYTHING you say when it's open., my sister was angry as her PSP for something called it a piece of shit and a few minutes later, in a squeaky voice the 3DS repeated it loud and clear... talk about awkward.
-The right side gets a little warm when plugged in and powered on, so it's best to charge with it in sleep mode or turned off.
-DS games can and will lag, and the quality of DS games is down scaled a bit, it does seem to enhance the audio tracks of DS games by a slight bit, but not enough to where non-audiophiles will notice; yes I am an audiophile... get over it.
-The camera leaves much to be desired, but I have my blackberry and its awesome camera, so thats not really a bad thing for me.
-The Aqua Blue 3DS that my sister got is a tacky bright color, it will also give you a headache in 3D mode because it competes with the 3D for your eye's attention, stick with Cosmo Black or future dark colors, your eyes will thank you.
-Region Locked for 3DS software, no one has confirmed if it's region locked for games that won't necessarily be released in all regions yet, so this MIGHT change, just maybe, I guess we will have to wait and see.
-Price $249.99 for a portable? Get real Nintendo, you won't have a one hit wonder with it that high, not for a long time at least.
But that is possibly Nintendo's worst idea of the decade, seeing as how it's a PORTABLE CONSOLE, portable meaning you take it everywhere, I would think region locking would have been on the bottom of their priority list but obviously their development team was spearheaded by monkeys or something. And don't try and say only a small majority of DS users import, because it's not as small as you might think! 35% of all DS users imported DS games during it's cycle and still are, with this move, Nintendo killed all those extra sales with this stupid choice. Luckily it's a software feature, so it can be hacked and or removed via a future update if they so desire.
It's about the same weight as a DSi, and lighter than the DS lite, substantially lighter than the XL. It's got a shiny finish, so fingerprints are to be expected, and like the Wii... it has a blue light on it that indicates whether or not it's off or in sleep mode... which can get annoying when it starts flashing at you.
Right now all I have are DS games, some videos, and my music, but I plan on getting a game within the next few weeks or so. BlazBlue CSII or Dead or Alive Dimensions... not sure yet, but people are right, this thing is powerful, definitely should not be considered a handheld, since it's more like a Portable Console.
Loving it so far, and I am oh so happy I decided to purchase one. Too bad there are no games I want for it yet... but that will soon be rectified with CSII and DoA:D, Kid Icarus, and Starfox, so I really can't complain in that respect.
Although the Cons outweigh the Pros, it just means I am beign honest, I personally love this system with all my might, but coming from a reviewers perspective, it falls short in quite a few key places, places where Sony will triumph with the NGP; other than it's lineup.
That's all I have on this awesome portable console for now; I refuse to classify this a handheld, and can't wait to find out what it can really do in the future.
